Overcoming the 3 D’s: Novice Dog Obedience Classes

When you first start dog obedience training, every successful sit or recall is a moment of celebration: Your dog heard what you said and followed directions! As your dog gets older, and basic commands become second nature, you’ll start working on the three D’s: distance, distraction and duration. Now the question isn’t, “Will your dog sit on command?” Instead, it becomes, “How long will your dog continue to sit as you walk away or something interesting happens?”

Advancing from Beginner to Novice

In beginner classes, your pup learns to handle commands for about two to three minutes, from a relatively short distance. In the PET DEGREE Novice Obedience class, you and your dog will work to extend that time to between five and eight minutes. Can you imagine your dog maintaining position for eight minutes after a single command? Working with the right trainers, in the right environment, makes extended sit and stay a real possibility.

PET DEGREE Training Facilities and Philosophy

During PET DEGREE Novice Dog Obedience courses, you work with trainers and your pet in a simulated real-world environment. Lots of people, other pets, smells, sounds and even food or other distractions help you get a handle on obedience during true-to-life scenarios. You’ll also work to establish good walking habits like asking your dog to move from a loose leash position to a position at-heel, all using only vocal commands.

By the time you finish all eight weeks of the course, your dog could be obeying all of the novice obedience commands, even in the most stressful and distracting conditions. You’ll even work at distance lessons, where your dog learns to sit, stay and come from far away. The PET DEGREE Novice Obedience Course will help you establish a strong connection that overcomes the three D’s.

Before you enroll: Make sure all vaccinations are up-to-date and your dog has completed the PET DEGREE Beginner Obedience course. If you didn’t discover PET DEGREE until after finishing a beginner dog obedience class elsewhere, simply arrange for an evaluation from a PET DEGREE Novice trainer.
